What is Agile Team Vision?

Just like a product has a vision, a team needs a vision too. Vision helps everyone see long-term outcomes and direction ahead. Teams can build a collective vision for themselves as teammates before projects begin to outline:

1. The audiences they serve

2. The team-focused problems to solve

3. The team goals

4. The value the team provides

5. What makes the team unique

6. What risks the team can identify to vet

7. The costs that may go into the team

8. The scope of Agile coaching and transformation work ahead

9. How the team measures success

Components of Agile Team Vision

The team vision statement

Provide a one sentence “elevator pitch” that embodies the team and its value. Write the vision statement last!

The audiences they serve

List all relevant target audiences that the team answers to or works with.

The team-focused problems to solve

What problem statements does your team face today related to Agile transformation and processes?

The team goals

What are the outcomes your team want this product to achieve in the business?

The value the team provides

When you solve the problems you’ve identified for your team, which pieces of value will your team deliver to the world? Create one value point per problem statement.

What makes the team unique

What value makes your team unique compared to other teams?

What risks the team can identify to mitigate

What are the things that could stand in the way of your Agile Transformation succeeding in the long-term? List anything related to team user experience, technology, market, business, or otherwise. Once you identify these risks, your team should work toward removing risks.

The costs that may go into the team

List the things that will contribute to “overhead” costs for your team Agile Transformation to succeed. This can be anything from training to partnerships to time, and everything in between.

The scope of Agile coaching and transformation work ahead

List the “definition of done” for Agile transformation: the outcomes that this team must achieve in order for Agile Transformation to be considered a success.

How the team measures success

List the metrics you are going to use to measure success in Agile Transformation over time. Identify the metrics, how you are going to measure your metrics, and how often you’ll collect them.

Why is it Valuable?

Team vision boards are valuable because they give every team member a stake in the outcomes from the beginning of work together. The vision helps a team understand why they are here together and what they are working towards.
