# Project Duties

## Definition

A duty is a set of responsibilities that teammates choose to take on as part of the project outcomes and milestones. Teammates who are cross-functional have people commit to their own duties, instead of telling people what to do.

## Duties are Fluid on Cross-Functional Teams

Teams who are cross-functional do not work in "departments" isolated. They co-work with each other and involve each other in the work constantly. Researchers do design; product people do research; designers do development. Teammate duties are decided by each team member. They commit and decide themselves how they want to get involved with a [deliverable](/project-portal/project-success-handbook/project-components/project-deliverables.md) called a [RACI chart](/agile-training-portal/agile-handbook/agile-related-outputs-and-deliverables/team-outputs-for-agile/agile-team-outputs-before-projects-begin/raci-charts.md). Check out the [Agile Handbook](/agile-training-portal/agile-handbook.md) for more information about how [team functions](/team-portal/new-teammate-handbook/project-training-teams/supported-team-functions-in-project-training.md) work on cross-functional agile teams:

## How it Relates to Other Components

The duty is a [set of activities](/project-portal/project-success-handbook/project-components/project-duties.md) that people commit to [every week](/agile-training-portal/agile-handbook/agile-teamwork/day-to-day-on-an-agile-team.md), or every iteration, depending on the Agile Method you have chosen for your team (see about methods [here](/agile-training-portal/agile-handbook/agile-methods.md)). These will determine how people get involved in different [deliverables](/project-portal/project-success-handbook/project-components/project-deliverables.md).
